Staff Writer A Minecraft Movie arrived on the big screens with no controller needed. Audiences have been anxiously waiting to watch their childhood game play out on the big screen.
A Minecraft Movie was officially released on April 4, 2025. It follows the storyline of four misfits; an old gamer (Jason Momoa), a loner brother (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), his sister (Emma Myers), with an animal lover fashionista (Danielle Brooks). The four main characters are set on an unexpected mission to save the Overworld and Earth from Malgosha (Rachel House) and her evil piglin army. However, they can’t do it alone; they need help from an experienced miner, Steve (Jack Black).
A Minecraft Movie was made for people who grew up on Minecraft. Fans were not afraid to chime in with the characters on their famous lines. Sophomore Gavin Stone was one of these fans, “I chimed with Steve due to so many of iconic lines.”
Senior and employee at Movies at Midway, Alex Mason claimed the film was a hit. “The Minecraft Movie has sold out so many times to the point that I’m sure I’ve sold over a thousand tickets for it.”
Senior Eric Cespedes’ favorite part of the Minecraft movie experience was the receptive, concert-like audience. Cespedes details, “When the audience cheered at every line, it was very funny. It made the film so much fun to watch.”
Minecraft is officially the top selling movie of 2025. “After just two weeks in theaters, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is already the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025 with doubling expectations in its $300 million global debut,” (AZFamily).
The film included popular Minecraft YouTubers, such as DanTDM, Aphmau, Mumbo Jumbo and LDShadowLady.
Freshman Ella Williamson comments about their inclusion,“I used to watch LDShadowLady and I really loved her; seeing that she was in the movie was a really cool moment for me because of how much she impacted my childhood.”
The film also paid tribute to Technoblade, a Minecraft YouTuber who passed away from metastatic sarcoma in 2022. Cespedes was pleased with the dedication to the Blade. “I thought it was pretty cool, since I watched his videos when I was younger.”
Not all players were satisfied with the movie. Stone claims, “I would change the rushed introduction and give more background on the characters,”
Cespedes agrees, stating,“[The movie] was actually terrible, it did not do [Minecraft] justice,”
Minecraft will be etched in history as the video game of the generation. However, it is up to the players if they want to spend their diamonds on the film version.
