Reading at Cape is not only done in the classroom. Did you know there is a school book club? The group finished reading the novel All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven in time for their meeting on January 22 at Stingray in Rehoboth Beach. The more recent book the group was reading was Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.

Every month the club selects which place they’d like to meet to discuss the books they read together as a group. Typically they choose a restaurant that’s local, mainly in Rehoboth. This club is great to be in, and even though it is not very well-known, they are extremely open to welcoming new members.

The book club members decide which book they would like to read next by sitting down together and sharing their ideas with each other. If someone does not feel comfortable participating in the book that is chosen, they can opt out of reading that book for that particular month. Mrs. Debbie Supplee, the leader of Cape’s book club and the school librarian, states, “I got interested in doing the club because I love to read, and I enjoy being around the kids. It also forces me to take time out of my busy life to sit down and read a good book.” She explained that her favorite part of the club is getting to meet new students that she might otherwise not have known.

Heidi Simmons, a sophomore at Cape, is an active member of the book club. She states, “I love the book club! It’s a really great club with some really great people in it! My favorite thing about being in it is interacting with people I wouldn’t normally talk to.” Simmons also stated that her favorite book the group has read so far was All the Bright Places. There are so many books that she would love to read in the club, and she will often share and suggest books she thinks the group would enjoy. Most of the time, regardless if her suggestion was the book chosen, the books always end up being phenomenal and must-reads.

The book club is not only beneficial to its students. English teachers, such as Mrs. Eileen Springfield, feel that this club “gives kids an opportunity to be with like-minded people and to discuss a mutual read that builds opinions, confidence and friendships.” Having these students more aware of different genres of books and being able to talk about them with their peers helps them in their daily English classes.

Being a part of the school book club is a great way to meet new people with common interests. The meetings are interesting and are always at fun places to visit. Having the opportunity to sit down with your peers and discuss a book that you are interested in is not only a good way to improve your reading abilities, but is also a great way to enhance bonds with your classmates.
