Heaven Turner ‘26 Staff Writer This year, Cape Henlopen High School welcomed Katie Izykowski as a social studies and economics teacher. Izykowski, referred to by her students as Ms. I, has seventeen years of teaching experience. She has taught social studies and economics at various schools in Maryland, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, and Delaware.
Throughout her high school years, Izykowski wanted to be a journalist but by graduation knew she wanted to be a teacher. With her dad’s knack for social studies, she stated that “history was already engraved in me.” Izykowski also reflects on how “it was Mr. Potter’s public speaking class that changed the game.” Gaining public speaking skills from her high school teacher’s course, she attained teaching fundamentals while working at a daycare. She discovered that working with children was her passion; however, she aspired to teach older students.
Izykowski plans to get involved with various clubs at Cape. She has notable experience with previous clubs, such as the knitting club, National Honors Society, debate team, prom, Spanish club, sign language club, and fashion club.
Additionally, Izykowski wants to add an AP course. She taught AP Comparative Government in the past. She explains how students have “limited exposure to other countries” and how it would help us comprehend why they do things differently.
Three of Izykowski’s AP Human Geography students; Jaidyn Jones, grade 11, Ava Haase, Grade 9, and Mathew Friscia, grade 11, reflected on Izykowski and her class. They described Izykowski’s class as being hard work, however, it is “lively and entertaining.” They appreciated the classroom for being bright, bubbly, vibrant, and more fun because of the students.
Jones stated that “you can tell she genuinely cares about teaching.” Haase described her as a “really sweet person.” While Friscia claimed her class is very “note-oriented", the students also said that Izykowski enjoys making work entertaining.
Izykowski is a bubbly, hands-on teacher. Her classes require motivation and organization however they are entertaining and intriguing. With students giving positive recommendations, Izykowski is heading into her first year at Cape on a positive note.
