A group of Government officials under the Trump administration have raised several national security concerns, through the unauthorized leak of classified military operations recently, using a Signal group chat.

“The practice of not using SCIFs (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) is an egregious breach of national security protocols,” stated Virginia Tech cybersecurity expert, Aaron F. Brantly.

Brantly adds that “principal groups using this is a profound violation of U.S. classification laws and constitutes a grave threat.”

Signal is a third-party platform recognized as a secure platform for civilian communication due to its end-to-end encryption and guarantee of certain privacy policies. Its use for discussing highly sensitive government operations is a clear violation of established protocols. There have been many criticisms of the use of Signal for official national ongoings.

On March 18 2025, the Pentagon released a department-wide memo that stated; “Please note: third party messaging apps are permitted by policy for unclassified accountability/recall exercises but are NOT approved to process or store nonpublic unclassified information.”

Despite the claims of some of the chat members, Signal has always been used in Government business, it has surfaced that such actions are illegal and a major security breach. The Senate Armed Services Committee has launched an investigation on the application of security protocols in Government communication.

The Committee appealed to the Acting Inspector General, with a bipartisan letter stating, "We are requesting an official investigation into the potential use of unclassified networks to discuss sensitive and classified information..."

Furthermore, beyond the legal ramifications, the incident has been condemned as unprofessional and careless in the public eye. Especially among many of the younger generation, including high school kids and young adults, the so-called “Signalgate” has become a symbol of what the White House stands for to civilians.

One senior at Cape Henlopen, Laura Ruiz, was highly critical of the incident, but more so over the actions taken by the White House and Trump administration, in dealing with the incident. “When they do things like this, it makes the people less certain about their government,” Ruiz comments, “it also shows that the government does not care about their consequences, and their consequences would probably fall on us, and we wouldn't have a president or a government to protect us from them or have them to trust in.”

The “Signalgate” incident is a reminder to America of the effects of our government climate. It is also a reminder of the gap between the people of America and their government, and a symbol of where a country stands.

“People need to do something, anything they can, right here and now, because it’s not about the government, it’s about the country, and right now we are the future of this country, we have to make the future we want right now,” Ruiz added. “The people are the power.”

Messages between government officials have been leaked, causing controversy about the safety of end-to-end encryption and protections.
