Lina Jensen '27 This year Cape has welcomed many new students and staff to the highschool. One of them being Stacy Thomas. Thomas is a phenomenal teacher that works in special education with a history in highschool education and law enforcement.
Along with teaching special education at Cape, Thomas has also been a part time travel agent for many years and formerly worked as a probation officer. Thomas has worked in the cape district for almost 21 years. While she originally aspired to be an attorney and received an associate's degree in criminal justice from Delaware Technical Community College. She then went on to receive multiple degrees from Wilmington University, a Bachelor’s in criminal justice, a Masters in education, and a Masters in school leadership.
Thomas loves working at Cape stating, “The kids are usually pretty respectful, the staff is just great. We’ve become kind of a family here.” Thomas says the biggest part of working in special education for her is adapting to different learning methods for each kid. “Every student learns differently, so coming up with ways each student learns best is a challenge.”
Outside of the work environment, she loves jamming to classic rock, but also has a passion for Disney, as well as working as a part time travel agent that gives her the opportunity to help others to experience the magic of Disney and other beautiful places for themselves.
Thomas says she enjoys the Cape atmosphere and community and that it is a pleasure to work with her colleagues. Thomas’ students also had the opportunity to share their experience in her class. They said that their favorite part about Thomas’s class is her kindness and that she lets them eat. The students say they enjoy their time in the classroom with Thomas and their peers and are always eager to learn and engage with their school community.
As well as her students, her colleagues also have great things to say. Emma Anderson, one of Stacy Thomas’ co teachers has some things to say about her, "She's been an awesome co teacher so far. I've worked with a handful of co teachers in my teaching career, right from the start, she has been dynamic and wants to get to know the students.”
Thomas has built up a reputation for being caring, intuitive and organized in the classroom. Anderson also stated, “It’s really important to have a good partnership with that person who’s in your classroom, and I can already tell from these last couple of months that she is excited to be here, wants to be interacting with students, and is a great partner in crime.”
With Stacy Thompson a part of Cape, new ideas and experiences can be explored. She is excited to see where the rest of this school year will take her and her students.
