Cape Junior Sophia Herrera is an avid member of the community, student, and role model. She always puts all of her effort into what she is passionate about and makes sure that everyone’s voice is heard. Beyond being an exceptional student, Herrera also plays an active part in the community as a member of the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), President of the Cape Interact Club, and a volunteer at a few local organizations.
With LASO, Herrera makes an effort to become involved with every possible volunteer opportunity that she can. She explains, “I am always looking to develop projects and teaching methods to allow students who don’t speak English to progress in new environments of studying.” Herrera also pursues this passion outside Cape, volunteering at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior through their daycare program “English as a second language”. “I am very passionate about helping young students receive a second chance at their education,” she says.
Dr. Becker, advisor of LASO, comments on Herrera’s contributions, “I am always impressed by her level of maturity and commitment,” she says. In addition to LASO, Herrera also volunteers at the Lewes Public Library organizing books, transits, and checkings each Saturday.
On top of her volunteer work, Herrera is also the President of Cape Interact, a Cape club that’s sole focus is to create leaders that serve the community. At the beginning of the school year, many of the remaining members of Interact were unsure if the club would last another year.
Giselle Rivera, senior member of Interact, explains the initiative Herrera took to reignite the club, emphasizing her outreach to Rehoboth Sunrise Rotarians. Rivera also believes that Herrera’s role as President has fostered a supportive and friendly environment where everyone has a voice and new members always feel welcomed. Rivera comments, “…she never missed a meeting and she’s a crucial part to any event we organize.”
Many students struggle to find balance between school and extracurriculars. Herrera, while managing a lot of different activities, has found a way to circumnavigate the community and its members while keeping a clear goal in mind. After high school, she hopes to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis to study aerospace engineering. The Naval Academy develops ambitious students who are passionate about becoming leaders and helping the community, similar to what she values.
Always going out of her way to offer help to her peers and colleagues, Herrera keeps an open mind when faced with challenges and obstacles. She comments on her aspirations, saying, “Not only do I hope for success in my own future, but I hope for the success others deserve in theirs.”
