Students participated in auditions for Cape's upcoming December production of Chicago: The Musical.

Cape students “had it coming” during an intense audition for the Spring Musical, Chicago: Teen Edition. On Monday, December 9, Cape Theatre program held auditions for the musical with a vocal audition, acting audition, and dance call.

Chicago takes place in the roaring twenties starring Roxie Hart. The woman murders her ex-lover and convinces her husband to take the blame. However, her husband, Amos, realizes this and turns against her. Roxie is then sent to death row and meets another inmate, Velma Kelly, and the two go head-to-head for the headlines in the news. The both team up to get “fame, fortune, and acquittal.”

The musical is very dance-heavy, which excites many of the talent who auditioned. Cape Senior Carly Favoroso feels as though “[Cape has] so many dancers especially in [the senior class] so it is a great opportunity to show other skills.”

Even though this musical is very mature, the songs will remain quite similar on stage. Auditioners had to sing iconic hits from the six-time Tony award-winning show. Some of these songs include “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango.”

Sadie Andros, Cape Theatre Director, who is directing the musical is a little nervous because of the use of provocative references. She believes “it is a mature piece so it is going to be difficult at times for students to access some of the acting that they have to do for the emotions.”

On the other hand, Cape Sophomore Ruby Manos is very excited for the acting style because she has done a similar musical prior. She states that she “really likes that style of music” and thinks that “this will be a really cool opportunity.”

After doing several musicals at Cape, Andros feels very confident about the production after initial auditions. She believes that some people really stood out and understood their characters very well.

Andros felt that “everyone this year was really well prepared for the audition.” She thinks Cape has “a pretty competitive group of really talented students.” She is most looking forward to the end product, seeing the whole cast and crew come together for an amazing performance.

The cast list came out on December 14 with outpouring comments of joy. Students who received cast roles were ecstatic about the results.

Junior Daphne Mock and Senior Adria Windish are playing Roxie and Velma, respectively. Windish expresses that “since freshman year Chicago has been [her] favorite musical… [she has] been wanting to be in a production of Chicago for many years now and [she is] very excited that Cape is giving the opportunity to do it”.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the Cape Theatre Department as the cast and crew are getting ready for an exciting performance. Chicago: Teen Edition will be performing on March 13, 14, 15, and 16.
