Known for his unique blend of R&B, pop, and electronic-feel music, The Weeknd continues to explore new sounds and themes within his latest album Hurry Up Tomorrow. It is his sixth studio album, as well as the third and final album to his trilogy; the other two being After Hours and Dawn FM.
The songs in After Hours focus on a character The Weeknd plays who is consumed by chaos, toxic love, addiction, and self-destruction. This album ends open to interpretation, but then comes Dawn FM, which is an album filled with regret, nostalgia, and self awareness. This album is also left open ended, which leaves Hurry Up Tomorrow to fill in the gaps. This album covers themes such as closure, self-discovery, and peace.
Singing along with The Weeknd is Playboi Carti, Annita, and Lana Del Rey. Freshman Madison Handley says, “I am happy with all these features, I just wish that Ariana Grande was featured as well, they sound really good together in their other songs.”
Along with those features, producers who worked with The Weeknd on this album are Pharrell Williams, Ojivolta, Metro Boomin, Oscar Holter, and Max Martin. “I know some of the producers and I’m familiar with their other songs and albums they have produced. Most of them have been good, so I think it’s good that they are working on the album.” Cape Junior Anna Evans explains.
Many fans have diverse opinions on this new album, some feeling satisfied and some feeling unfulfilled with the trilogy’s ending. Freshman Anika Sekhri, an avid Weeknd listener, gives her thoughts on the new album. “I thought that some songs on his previous album were better, but these songs had a different vibe than he usually does. They were still good.”
The Weeknd’s new album highlights his growth as an artist and his ability to evolve and push the boundaries of his music. This album is expected to bring in many new fans and keep old fans excited for later releases.
