Liam Payne’s Legacy

Beloved One Direction singer, Liam Payne, died on October 16, but the investigation into his untimely and mysterious death continues on. 

Payne got his start through the British television show X-Factor, where he was grouped into One Direction. He was with One Direction until their hiatus in 2016. His first single as a solo artist was “Strip That Down” with Quavo, which became extremely popular and reached over 1 billion streams on Spotify. 

Cape Henlopen Junior Rylie Cathcart has been a Directioner and Liam Payne fan since she was a child, and “was devastated by the news.” He was her “childhood, and he died too soon in such a sad way.” 

On October 16, Payne reportedly “fell” off a balcony in his Argentina hotel. Prior to his death, hotel workers called 911 and reported that Payne was trashing his hotel room during a drug binge. NBC News details that he was going in and out of consciousness, and the caller expressed fears of Payne falling or jumping off of the balcony before the incident occurred. 

The National Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Payne had injuries that were “compatible with those produced by a fall from height” and he died from “polytraumatism, internal and external hemorrhage.” The autopsy also determined that he “could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.” 

Cape Sophomore Grace Heers is suspicious about the details of his death. “I heard that there were people in his hotel room before he died, and the 911 caller predicting it was so suspicious to me.” Overall, she thinks “that they could have done more to prevent his death.” 

One of the drugs found in Payne's system was Pink Cocaine. The drug does not contain any actual cocaine, but it is a mixture of drugs with a pink color, according to getsmartaboutdrugs.gov. Pink Cocaine is a fairly new street drug, and it has been linked to many celebrities, including Diddy. According to CBS, the drug has been on the radar of researchers, but celebrity cases have made the drug more familiar to the public. 

There have been several arrests, including Payne's assistant who gave him the drugs, and the speculation about what actually happened continues. Liam is survived by his parents, Karen and Geoff Payne, and his son Bear. Despite all of the speculation, Liam Payne is remembered as a talented man who left an impact on people around the world through his music.
