Social Media Manager After a strong home-opening win against Sussex Central, 22-0, the Cape Boys Lacrosse team has high hopes for the upcoming season. There’s a core group of experienced Seniors, led by Jake Hutchison on close defense and attackman Burke Healy; both are committed to play at Catholic University in Washington D.C.

The defense is anchored by Junior Mason Trench in net, currently ranked as the third best player in Delaware. He had the ability to play for Sussex Academy’s high school team in 8th grade. Trench does not lack experience nor confidence in the crease as a fourth year varsity starter.

“Our team has a lot of chemistry and a good amount of young contributors. I expect to see our performance increase throughout the season as guys begin to step into their shoes,” stated Trench, “For now we work one step closer to our goal every day.”

Standout Viking midfielders, Junior Brenner Short and Senior Evan Burris are described as “leaders on the turf” by their teammates. Short and Burris both have solid stature and speed that allows them to explode on opportunities whereas shorter and weaker opponents cannot not.

On the offensive side of the field, Juniors Ryan Morgan and Grant Conway, hit the back of the net often. Morgan has four years of varsity experience under his belt, as he was able to play varsity in eighth grade at Sussex Academy with Mason Trench.

When asked if the extra year of high school ball helped, Trench replied, “Absolutely. I had already kind-of washed away the nerves my 8th grade year at SAAS, so at Cape I’ve always been more determined than anxious.”

During the 2024-2025 season, new faces have shown up to help the team perform their best under the bright stadium lights. Freshmen AJ Grapski and Channing Smith had an immediate impact on the team, despite being the youngest on the squad. Sussex Academy transfer, Carter Nemcic, has also consistently contributed to success on the scoreboard.

The Vikings are hopeful for a strong end-of-the-season performance as they head up north to face a tough caliber of competition.
