After years of anticipation, Moana 2 is set to come out November 27 and is already breaking records. The trailer on YouTube reached 178 million views the day after the release.
In the sequel, Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors and forms her own crew, reuniting with her friend Maui. Vulture.com describes it as, “a call from the ancestors, to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”
Moana, the first in the franchise, was extremely successful and grossed over $687 million worldwide. The sequel is projected to hit $1 billion at the box office. Disney has not had a $1 billion dollar animated film since 2019, so the sequel is going to be a big deal.
The cast is similar, with Auli'i Cravalho returning as the voice of Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Alan Tudyk as Hei Hei, plus other known names: Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rose Matafeo.
Sophomore at Sussex Academy Caitlin Perchinak, is “excited for this movie” and feels, “it’s relatable to [her] life considering [she lives] at the beach.” Overall, she believes that “the plot will be a similar concept but have some different aspects.”
Many actors in the film have posted behind the scenes photos, videos, and sneak peeks detailing the movie and recording sessions. The sequel originally was set to be a television show instead of a major film. Disney decided that cutting down the television show to a movie sequel would be the most successful option.
Cape Junior Bridgett Cole has “high expectations for the sequel” and fears that “the sequel may not be able to beat it.” She is “interested in seeing more new characters and how the island adjusts to her new life.”
As Moana 2 is being held to such a high standard, fans are looking forward to the inevitable release and hopeful success of the sequel.
