This year, Mrs. Helen Timmons started her Special Education career at Cape. Timmons started teaching special education students 29 years ago. She has been teaching in Delaware since 2003 and taught in Virginia for 6 years prior. Outside of school, Timmons teaches yoga and is working to build a new house with her family.

Although Timmons originally did not want to work in special education, she fell in love with it when she was moved to an alternative position at her previous school, Indian River High School. She was told that she would be a “good fit” to work with kids who learn in different ways. Timmons stated, “I personally enjoy walking around and helping students in need, rather than lecturing in front of a class.”

Timmons believes one of the most important parts of her job is getting to know her students on a personal level, to help them realize their teachers are here for them. Timmons said, “If they think something is hard in the classroom, I want to teach them how to do it and eventually help them overcome difficult things outside of the classroom.”

Timmons is motivated to keep teaching when she sees the smiles on students’ faces when she is guiding them to success. Her students’ enthusiasm keeps her going throughout the day. Timmons stated, “I am very impressed by these students. The kids here support each other and our staff provides plenty of resources for students.”
